Interview to three experts in gender violence
Interviewer:
Good evening, this is the Antonio Benítez chat show. Today we are going to talk
about a very sad topic, gender violence. And for that purpose we have invited
three experts on the topic, who have very kindly accepted the invitation. Their
names are Felipe Sánchez Rodríguez, who is a well known guest of this
programme…
Interviewer:
Good night, Felipe
Felipe: Good night, Matías
Interviewer:
José Manuel Castejón Martín, it´s a pleasure to have you here.
José Manuel: Good night, Matias, it´s a pleasure for
me as well
Interviewer:
And…Alejandro Zayas García, thank you very much for coming from New York, where
you usually work.
Alejandro: Oh, I´m delighted to be here, thank you
very much for your invitation.
Interviewer: How lethal can gender violence be?
José Manuel: Well, I will give you some data: gender
violence kills more women in the world than cancer, malaria, traffic accidents
and war all together.
Alejandro: Yes, actually every fifteen seconds a woman
is hit by a man in some part of the world.
Felipe: And one out of four pregnant women is
assaulted, which increases the possibility of having an abortion.
Interviewer:
What are the causes of gender violence?
José Manuel: I think that some men don´t accept that
women can be active, independent, powerful and free.
Alejandro: And abusers think that is violence in
natural in men, it is part of their nature and it can be justified.
Felipe: So society believes that violence is out of
men´s control and it´s women who have to change their behavior so that they
don´t provoke men´s violent reaction.
Interviewer:
So…the problem is to accept violence as a way of resolving conflict…
José Manuel:
Exactly, it is the idea that men must be aggressive to be masculine. This is a
wrong idea…
Alejandro: Of course, and alcohol and drugs make
things worse.
Felipe: And the isolation of women is also a problem.
Abused women must be supported by their families and their communities.
Interviewer:
Very interesting, so…to conclude the interview we could say that…
José Manuel: Real men are not violent
Alejandro: Women are not weak and dependent
Felipe: We can fight against gender violence, changing
people´s beliefs…
